Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Patients attending for a blood test.

Note: You must have a blood request form from your GP/Consultant to arrange and attend an appointment.

1. Where will I need to go to have my blood test?

Blood tests are carried out in the Medical / Surgical Outpatient Department, North Wing, Level 1, Monday - Friday between 09:00 - 12:45.

2. How long will I have to wait?

Please be prepared to wait for approximately 20-30 minutes following your arrival. You will be attending during a very busy clinic time. However we aim to see you as soon as possible and your patience is appreciated.

3. Where is the blood taken from?

Blood is usually taken from your arm (the anticubicle fossa). The phlebotomists are very experienced and if you have poor venous access the phlebotomist may take the sample from a different area of your arm. You will be asked to give consent before any samples are taken and you have the right to refuse and seek further advice.

The amount of blood taken depends on the number of tests required, however, this is still only a small amount, about 2-5mls per tube.

All staff adhere to Infection and Protection and Control Policy and Guidelines. Your skin will be cleaned prior to the procedure and all equipment used is single use and sterile. The puncture site will be dressed following the procedure.

6. Is the test going to hurt?

You will feel a small amount if discomfort as with any insertion of a needle.

7. What will happen if I feel ill during or following the test?

Occasionally some patients feel faint - all Phlebotomists are trained to deal with these incidents, and qualified nursing staff are available in the department to help if necessary. If you have a history of feeling faint or have had adverse reactions previously during or following blood tests, please inform the Phlebotomist when you attend and she/he will disuss this with you before carrying out the test.

8. How can I find out my Blood group?

You will need to visit you GP and consult her/him regarding this test - you will be charged a fee for this test.

9. How long does it take for results to be available?

Routine tests are normally available within 1-2 days. Certain blood tests are sent to other reference laboratories and these test results may take up to 8 weeks.
